Tae-Kwon Do
.跆拳道
태권도
The ways of kicks and punches.
The Korean most ancient martial arts, an art of various powerful hands and legs technique (mainly) used in combat and self-defence. This art emphasise on the powerful kicks throw at opponents, with a combination of blocks, punches, locks, throws, as well as incorporating pressure points for higher level trainings.
ITF (STA) And WTF (STF)
TKD has evolved from its predecendents to 2 major organisation throughout the world. While the former was founded by General Choi Hong Hi in 1966, it teaches the most traditional form of the martial arts and focus on its fundamentals, while the latter place its focus on competition and belongs to neither any style nor system. WTF is recognised in the Olympics as a sports committee and TKD sparring as an event in 1980.
What it trains
TKD, like any other form of martial arts, trains one on its physical strength, speed, sense of balance, stamina, and flexibility. One very obvious example would be the mastery of the patterns tat adopts various postures which can be applied to realtime combats. Also, not forgetting the tormenting stretching exercises that learners have to go through during every warmup activity. Not only so, TKD also builds up one's mental strength, discipline, endurance, power, concentration etc. The unification of the physical and the mental mastery is the development of extreme force to break wooden boards, employing techniques that requires extreme focus and concentration to control the inner strength in each and everyone.
The 5 Tenets of TKD.
COURTESY (Ye Ui)
It can be said that courtesy is an unwritten regulation prescribed by ancient teachers of philosophy as a means to enlighten human beings while maintaining a harmonious society. It can be further be as an ultimate criterion required of a mortal.
NTEGRITY (Yom Chi)
In Taekwon-Do, one must be able to define right and wrong and have a conscience, if wrong, to feel guilt in which his/her belief and value lies.
PERSEVERANCE (In Nae)
There is an old Oriental saying, "Patience leads to virtue or merit, One can make a peaceful home by being patient for 100 times." Certainly happiness and prosperity are most likely brought to the patient person. To achieve something, whether it is a higher degree or the perfection or a technique, one must set his goal, then constantly persevere. One of the most important secrets in becoming a leader of Taekwon-Do is to overcome every difficulty by perseverance. Confucius said, "one who is impatient in trivial matters can seldom achieve success in matters of great importance."
SELF CONTROL (Guk Gi)
This tenet is extremely important inside and outside the dojang, whether conducting oneself in free sparring or in one's personal affairs. A loss of self-control in free sparring can prove disastrous to both student and opponent. It is exerting consciousness over the mind and body, and to demostrate mastery and control over one's physical and mental state. An inability to live and work within one's capability or sphere is also a lack of self-control.
INDOMITABLE SPIRIT (Baekjool Boolgool)
It is shown when a courageous person and his principles are pitted against overwhelming odds. A serious student of Taekwon-Do will at all times be modest and honest. If confronted with injustice, he will deal with the belligerent without any fear or hesitation at all, with indomitable spirit, regardless of whosoever and however many the number may be.
Confucius declared," It is an act of cowardice to fail to speak out against injustice." As history has proven, those who have pursued their dreams earnestly and strenuously with indomitable spirit have never failed to achieve their goals.
